Located southwest of Dixon near the city of Vacaville, Travis Air Force Base is a major regional employer and one of the Air Force's key bases for military transport aircraft. The City of Dixon is home to many civilian and enlisted Travis personnel. Each year Travis AFB plays host to a major air show featuring flybys and static displays of the most advanced aircraft in the Air Force arsenal.
Travis is the home of the largest airlift organization in the Air Force. Known as the "Gateway to the Pacific," Travis handles more cargo and passenger traffic through its aerial port than any other military air terminal in the United States. The primary mission of the base is to provide rapid, responsive, reliable airlift of forces to any point on earth in support of our national objectives.
Travis also houses the David Grant Medical Center, a state-of-the-art hospital serving Travis personnel and other veterans of military service. There is also a Base Exchange Mini-mall, Shopping Center and Commissary for the convenience of military personnel. The main exchange is one of the largest in the world, and services over 77,000 customers each month. The base also houses the U.S. Post Office, military clothing sales, pharmacy refill annex and an air museum containing examples of many past U.S. military aircraft.
